About: Climatically and geographically, Tempranillo is well suited to our vineyard however, our primary concern, was its survival in Moppity’s bony, free draining, hungry, thirsty lean soil(which can take a long time to establish new plantings). We have some of the oldest vine root systems in the region. Therefore, we made the decision to graft the Tempranillo on to some of the original, mature Chardonnay and Semillon vines that were planted back in 1973. It was a risky & expensive decision but it meant that if it paid off, we could preserve the old vine root system, and finish up with 40 year old Tempranillo vines just one year after introducing the variety to the vineyard!
Viticulture: Two different clones grafted to three blocks with varying aspects at an elevation of 600m.
Wine making: The fruit was cold soaked pre-fermentation and matured in new French oak barrels for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: The bouquet offers vibrant and bright cherries dusted in dark cocoa, along with subtle notes of oak.The palate is concentrated and luscious; more cherries and dark berries, with hints of dark bitter chocolate. Medium bodied but the flavours are intense and there’s an exceptional combination of vibrant fruits coupled with lovely, moreish grainy tannins.
