an exciting revelation for wine explorers seeking the
next stage in evolution of sophisticated Australian wine
Moppity, established in 1973 is a hidden gem boasting some of the oldest vines in Southern NSW.
At 170 acres, our vineyard has a magical mix of unique blocks, planted to various clones on undulating terrain with a variety of aspects, elevations and soil types.
“They are beautifully made wines, from a high-quality region.” James Halliday
In 2002, Jason and Alecia Brown began their search for a vineyard from which they could pursue their dreams of making more expressive, medium bodied and elegant wines.
In 2004, they found ‘thier diamond in the rough’. Located near a town called Young in Southern NSW, the vineyard was located in one of Australia’s smallest and little-known wine regions (Hilltops).
Seduced by the cool climate, high elevation and gnarly old vines, it was what they needed to craft wines of purity, finesse and vibrancy.
In Australia, less than 1% of vineyards are located at or above 600m.
Grown at this altitude, our vines enjoy a high diurnal temperature range, resulting in wines that are brighter, fresher and more complex.
Jason Brown, owner/winemaker explains “The vines will madly produce sugar, flavour and colour during the day but then with a significant drop in overnight temperature the vines will get that ‘shut down’ period. This slows the vine down and allows it to retain natural acidity and produce vibrant flavour profiles. If the night and days are equally warm, the vines produce heavy, jammy, flabby wines and that’s certainly not what we want.”
