Our Lock & Key Shiraz has built it’s own reputation for consistently producing high quality, cool climate Shiraz well above it’s price point. All the fruit is sourced from our high altitude, single vineyard in Hilltops, Southern NSW. We believe a key element of all ‘Moppity Shiraz’ comes from the art of blending small batches of different blocks and clones to produce wines that have a kaleidoscope of flavour and textural profiles. Moppity Vineyards; winner of the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge in 2014 & 2016.

Technical & Tasting Notes
VITICULTURE
2018 was a moderate vintage with warm days balanced by cooler night temperatures which produced fruit with incredible colour and intensity of flavour but with good natural acidity and brightness.
WINE MAKING
Cold soaked pre-ferment, 12 day fermentation, barrel aged in a combination of older French hogsheads and stainless steel.
TASTING NOTES
A seamless medium-bodied palate, with bright youthful fruits and excellent balance. Layered with red and purple fruits, floral tones and peppery spice. Structured yet silky with lovely length.
Reviews
Vintage 2018
“Squeaky clean, well ripened, fresh, medium in weight and polished. It doesn’t put a foot wrong, and drinking it is a pleasure. Red berries more than black, woodsy spice notes rather than any overt oak. You can buy with confidence.” Halliday Wine Companion
Vintage 2017
“Expressing pristine fruit and perfumed aromas, the inviting bouquet shows red cherry, plum, violet, thyme and toasted almond characters. The palate delivers excellent weight and textural mouthfeel, elegantly framed by silky tannins, finishing persistent and attractive.” Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“This wine shows its cool climate heritage with aromas of dark berry fruits, savoury tones, vanilla and hints of spice whilst being complex and interesting. Pepper spice at front dark balanced with dark berry fruits, savoury and complex. The tannins are balanced and soft to achieve a harmonious full mouthfeel. The finish is long and smooth and stays with great length.” Stephen Read, Wine Matrix
“A juicy, spicy light-bodied shiraz that has won a string of trophies over the years…” James Halliday
Vintage 2016
“It is a wine built around it’s texture and structure, the dark berry and earthy flavours held within mouth-watering tannins.” James Halliday
“.. Lock and Key 2016 stands out for its beautiful, sweet perfume – both floral and fruity at the same time. The juicy palate continues the floral–fruit theme, offering great depth of flavour and round, soft, fine tannins. It’s a great example of the seductive Hilltops style and a worthy winner of gold at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Wine Show.” Chris Shanahan
Vintage 2014
“This is a beautifully styled and refined expression of the variety, exhibiting dark plum, blueberry, game and mixed spice characters with toasted nut undertones. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, while remaining focused and tightly structured. The wine is elegant, yet powerful, and is impressively long on the finish.” Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“Good hue and depth to the colour; a prime example of cool grown shiraz, its quality conferred by the 40 year old estate vineyard and skilled winemaking. Blackberry and plum fruit drives the bouquet and medium to full bodied palate, with a touch of choc-mint adding to the flavour parcel, ripe tannins to the structure. James Halliday, Wine Companion
Vintage 2013
“The texture and structure are outstanding, the cool grown mix of real cherry, plum, spice and licorice ditto. Fantastic value.” James Halliday, Wine Companion
